How sustainable is a mega-event like the 2024 European Football Championship? This question was posed by the “Sustainability Detectives” of Deutsche Telekom’s Teachtoday initiative. In a media education challenge, young people were actively involved in the discussion and shaping of a sustainable and digitally responsible future. They took on the role of reporters during the championship to investigate and report on sustainability efforts.
Equipped with cameras and microphones, the sustainability detectives made stops at three major stations of the European Championship: the Telekom Fan World in Berlin, a live game at the Olympiastadion, and the MagentaTV studio in Cologne, where they accompanied the winning team of the Telekom cell phone collection campaign.
They spoke with fans, players advocating for sustainability and fairness, and officials. This resulted in a wide range of perspectives on engagement and interest in sustainability and digitalization.

Raising awareness for global engagement
As sustainability detectives, young people had the opportunity to actively participate in the discussion about a sustainable and digitally responsible future and make their voices heard. In the long term, this strengthens awareness for digital sustainability and responsible online behavior.
The challenge also provided a unique opportunity to educate students about the importance of sustainability in an international context. By linking the challenge with a popular event, it demonstrated that important topics such as environmental protection and social responsibility also play a role in international sports events.
